Underrated, Underappreciated, & Under the Radar: THE REDMI NOTE 13 Brings Flagship Vibes on a Midrange Budget
We are probably in one of the best eras of smartphone artistry, as whatever your budget, there is a device somewhere around that price. For everyone who can afford the iPhone 15 Pro Max or the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, there is someone whose options are limited to the Tecno Spark or Infinix Hot series. What if (no, not the title of that Marvel Series) there is a device that bridges both segments, a device that brings flagship features but at a price point that is closer to the budget MSRP? You will be hard-pressed to find a device that fits this description better than the Xiaomi Redmi Series.
The Redmi Note Series
Arguably one of the best midrange series, the Redmi Note series is in its 13th iteration. Traditionally, this phone sits firmly in the midrange segment. You will get serviceable performance, a more-than-average camera experience, and a custom ROM-friendly platform for enthusiasts who love tinkering with their phones. The series was already popular before Xiaomi officially entered the Nigerian market. Since Xiaomi’s grand entrance, the series continues to wrestle market share with household brands like Infinix and Tecno.
The Redmi Note 13 Series
Last week, Xiaomi Nigeria officially launched the Redmi Note 13 Series in Nigeria. The series features three phones, namely, the Redmi Note 13, the Redmi Note 13 Pro, and the top-of-the-line Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G.
Cameras
The “Every Shot Iconic” tagline for the release gives away the camera-centric nature of these devices, and spec-wise, you can easily say they didn’t disappoint. The Redmi Note 13 has a 108MP primary camera, while the Pro models have a ridiculous 200MP camera with optical image stabilization (OIS). For context, the Samsung S24 Ultra also has a 200MP primary camera (not the same sensor, but you get our point). Things are slightly tuned down with 8MP and 2MP cameras for ultra-wide and macro shots across all three devices. The front camera uses a 16MP shooter. The shooting experience is further enhanced by the Xiaomi Imaging Engine. We can confirm that, in optimal lighting conditions, the cameras on this phone, especially the primary cameras, will compare favourably with many flagship devices.
Screen
On paper, the Note 13 series has arguably the best screen at this price point. The vanilla 13 has an FHD 6.67 AMOLED 120Hz refresh rate, Gorilla Glass 3, and 1800 nits peak brightness. The 13 Pro keeps the same refresh rate and resolution but comes with a reduced 1300 nits peak brightness but a superior Gorilla Glass 5. The 13 Pro Max blows everything out of the water with a 1.5k resolution, 1800 nits peak brightness, Dolby Vision support (for HDR content), and Gorilla Glass Victus.
Performance
Unsurprisingly, each of the devices has a different processor: a Snapdragon 685, MediaTek Helio G99-Ultra, and the MediaTek Dimensity 200-Ultra for the Redmi Note 13, 13 Pro, and the Pro+ 5G. These are midrange processors and will handle everyday tasks with relative ease, but don’t expect to play PUBG or Genshin Impact in Ultra-HD, though.
Battery and Charging
All the phones in this series have a 5000 mAh battery, which is more than enough by today’s standards. Charging speed is where things differ. The vanilla Note 13 fast charging maxes out at 33W, the Pro at 67W, while the Pro+ does 120W Hypercharge. In an era where new phones come without chargers, these phones will come with appropriate chargers in the boxes.
Verdict
The Redmi Note 13 follows a tried and tested approach and consequently ticks all our boxes. Whichever one you settle for, you will be getting value for your money.
