The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra was a serious flagship when it launched: a 6.8-inch QHD+ 120Hz AMOLED display, 108MP main camera, dual telephoto lenses, 5G, IP68 water resistance, S Pen support, and a 5000mAh battery. In 2026, the hardware is still impressive. The buying question has changed, though. You are no longer choosing between the S21 Ultra and another 2021 flagship. You are choosing between a used premium phone with aging battery and ended software support, a newer used Samsung like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra or Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and current options on the Ogabassey smartphones catalog.
That makes the S21 Ultra a good deal only when the condition, warranty, and price are right. It is not a phone to buy blindly because the name says Ultra.
Who this is for in 2026
The Galaxy S21 Ultra still makes sense for buyers who want a premium screen, strong cameras, and better build quality than many new budget phones. It is especially attractive if you create social content, take travel photos, watch video often, or want a large Samsung flagship without paying current flagship money.
It is less attractive if you depend on long-term security updates, want the newest Galaxy AI tools, use banking and work apps that require current security patches, or need a phone you can comfortably keep for another three to four years. Samsung’s current security update list no longer places the regular Galaxy S21, S21 Plus, or S21 Ultra among supported monthly or quarterly models, while newer devices such as the S22 series, S23 series, S24 series, S25 series, and S26 series remain listed at different support levels. That is the biggest 2026 change from the older version of this article.
Key specs and buying context
The S21 Ultra was overbuilt in the right places. You get a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with up to 120Hz refresh rate and QHD+ resolution, Snapdragon 888 or Exynos 2100 depending on region, 12GB or 16GB RAM depending on variant, 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB storage, and no microSD card slot. The battery is 5000mAh with 25W wired charging, wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging. The rear camera system includes a 108MP wide camera, 12MP ultrawide, 3x telephoto, and 10x periscope telephoto. The front camera is 40MP.
For everyday use, the S21 Ultra is still fast enough for WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, banking apps, email, browsing, photo editing, and most mobile games. The Snapdragon 888 version is usually the preferred pick because it tends to perform better under sustained load than many Exynos 2100 units, but both versions are now old enough that battery health and heat management matter more than benchmark scores.
For storage, avoid the 128GB model if you shoot a lot of video. There is no memory card slot, and 4K video, WhatsApp media, offline music, and large games can fill the phone quickly. The 256GB model is the safer minimum for most 2026 buyers; 512GB is best if the price difference is small.
A practical checklist for inspecting a used Galaxy S21 Ultra before buying in 2026.
Camera and video: still the main reason to care
The camera system remains the S21 Ultra’s strongest selling point. The 108MP main camera still produces sharp daylight photos, the ultrawide is useful for interiors and group shots, and the 10x optical zoom is still better than what many mid-range phones offer. For concerts, church events, school activities, travel, product shots, and outdoor content, that zoom lens is the reason the S21 Ultra can still feel special.
There are limits. Newer models such as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra process night photos better, focus more confidently, and handle difficult HDR scenes more consistently. The S21 Ultra can also warm up during long 4K recording sessions, especially if the battery is weak or the phone has been repaired poorly. For TikTok, Instagram Reels, casual YouTube, and family videos, it is still strong. For professional night video or heavy event coverage, buy newer if your budget allows.
Battery, charging, and used-condition checks
The original battery capacity is 5000mAh, but no 2021 phone should be judged by its original number alone. A used S21 Ultra in 2026 may have a battery that feels closer to a smaller phone after years of charge cycles. Heavy 5G, mobile hotspot, gaming, camera use, and high-brightness outdoor use will expose that age quickly.
Before paying, check battery health indirectly: does the phone drop percentage suddenly, heat up while charging, restart under camera or gaming load, or fall from 20% to zero too quickly? Ask whether the battery has been replaced and where. A cheap replacement battery can be worse than an old original one. Also test wired charging, wireless charging, the USB-C port, speaker volume, microphone, vibration motor, fingerprint reader, cameras, and screen touch across the curved edges.
The S21 Ultra supports 25W wired charging, not the faster 45W charging found on some newer Ultra models. It also did not ship with a charger in many markets, so budget for a quality USB-C PPS charger if the seller does not include one.
Software support is the deal-breaker for some buyers
The S21 Ultra launched with Android 11 and was included in Samsung’s promise of four generations of Android/One UI upgrades plus up to five years of security updates for eligible Galaxy devices. By 2026, that promise has effectively run its course for the regular S21 series. Android 15 with One UI 7 is the sensible final-software expectation for the S21 Ultra, and security patch availability now depends on region, carrier history, and what the phone already received before support ended.
This does not mean the phone becomes useless overnight. Apps will continue to work for many users. But if you keep sensitive documents on your phone, use mobile banking heavily, manage business accounts, or plan to keep one device for years, software support should carry real weight in your decision. In that case, a Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S24 Ultra, or newer Galaxy S26 Ultra gives you a much cleaner runway.
5G and network fit in Nigeria
The S21 Ultra supports 5G, but 5G should not be the only reason you buy it in Nigeria. Coverage varies by city, network, area, and indoor signal quality. If you live or work in parts of Lagos or Abuja with strong 5G coverage, the phone can take advantage of faster data when the correct variant and SIM support the bands your network uses. If most of your day is on 4G, Wi-Fi, or areas with weak 5G, a clean battery and warranty matter more than the 5G label.
Before buying an imported unit, confirm that it is factory unlocked, not carrier-locked, not blacklisted, and not stuck with a region-specific software issue. Test calls, data, hotspot, dual SIM or eSIM behavior if relevant, and mobile banking apps before completing the purchase.
Price and value: when it is a good buy
The S21 Ultra is worth considering when it is clearly cheaper than an S22 Ultra or S23 Ultra in similar condition. If the price is only slightly lower than the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, the S22 Ultra is usually the smarter Samsung buy because it adds an integrated S Pen, a newer chip, and a longer remaining support window. If the S21 Ultra is close to the S23 Ultra, choose the S23 Ultra unless you are getting an unusually clean S21 Ultra with warranty and a major discount.
Do not compare only the headline price. Compare the full cost: battery replacement risk, screen replacement cost, charger cost, warranty, return window, storage size, and whether the phone has been opened. A cheap unit with a faint green line, weak battery, or face-ID-style seller story about “only small issue” can become expensive quickly.
Trade-offs to know before you pay
No microSD card slot, so storage choice matters.
No charger in many boxes, and used units may come with poor accessories.
No built-in S Pen slot; it supports S Pen input, but the pen and case are separate.
Curved screen repairs can be costly in Nigeria.
Software support is the main long-term weakness in 2026.
Battery health varies widely across used and refurbished units.
Compare the S21 Ultra against newer Ultra models before deciding whether the used price is low enough.
Alternatives worth comparing
If you love the S21 Ultra idea but want a cheaper entry point, the Samsung Galaxy S21 and Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus can work for lighter users, but they lose the Ultra camera system and are under the same support concern. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is usually harder to recommend now because it is older and had more camera-focus criticism when new.
The S22 Ultra is the natural upgrade if you want the Note-style S Pen built into the phone. The S23 Ultra is the stronger sweet spot if your budget stretches, because it improves efficiency and long-term comfort. The S24 Ultra is better for buyers who care about Galaxy AI, longer software support, flat-screen durability, and resale value. The S26 Ultra is the premium forward-looking option if you want the newest Samsung ecosystem features and a much longer update horizon, but it belongs in a different budget conversation.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra still worth buying in 2026?
Yes, but only if the price is clearly below newer Ultra models and the unit passes battery, display, network, storage, warranty, and unlock checks. For long-term software support, compare S22 Ultra, S23 Ultra, S24 Ultra, or newer options first.
What should I check before buying a used Galaxy S21 Ultra?
Check battery behavior, screen burn-in or green-line issues, camera focus, USB-C charging, wireless charging, fingerprint unlock, speaker and microphone quality, S Pen support, storage size, network unlock status, warranty, and whether the phone has been opened or repaired.
Is the Galaxy S21 Ultra better than a new mid-range phone?
The Galaxy S21 Ultra can still beat many new mid-range phones on display quality, zoom camera, build, and premium feel. A new mid-range phone may win on warranty, battery freshness, longer update runway, and lower repair risk.
Verdict: should you buy the Galaxy S21 Ultra in 2026?
Yes, but only as a value buy with eyes open. The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is still powerful enough for normal use, still has a beautiful display, and still offers one of the most useful zoom camera systems in an older flagship. It is a good buy if the unit is clean, the battery is healthy or recently replaced properly, the screen is perfect, the storage is at least 256GB for heavy users, the phone is unlocked, and the price is meaningfully below newer Ultra models.
Do not buy it if you want a phone to keep safely for several more years, if the seller offers no return window, if the price is close to S22 Ultra or S23 Ultra money, or if you rely heavily on security-sensitive apps. In 2026, the S21 Ultra is no longer the flagship to beat. It is a premium used phone that can still be excellent when bought carefully.
